about

By John Shand
The Basement
October 9

Much exceptional music has been fostered under its auspices, some of which constituted this four-hour fifth (Jazzgroove Assoc.) birthday celebration. The Carl Dewhurst Quartet headlined with a blend of jazz and, well, groove, at the highest level. Fittingly, it is a band I first heard in Jazzgroove's original home, the Lansdowne Hotel, and which, like the organisation itself, has grown in stature.

Dewhurst is an exceptional guitarist. He reinvents himself and his sound for different contexts, always playing with commitment, imagination and heart. He began with a slinky, ringing tone over the more belligerent backdrop from organist Stu Hunter, bassist Cameron Undy and drummer Warren Trout. He built the bite in his sound until, for a fierce swagger of a piece called Dog, he turned on the distortion, and the band turned up the energy.
